Every Crit Fails campaign runs on Foundry VTT with Discord voice. You do not need to buy a licence, install anything, or learn the software — your Dungeon Master owns it and your character sheet does the arithmetic for you.
What Foundry gives a table that Discord alone does not
- Maps that are built, not described. 2D and 3D battlemaps with real line of sight, so what your character can see is what you can see.
- Dynamic lighting. A torch is an actual radius. A dark corridor is actually dark, and that changes how a party moves through a dungeon.
- Sheets that do the maths. Attacks, saves and spell slots are buttons. New players stop worrying about arithmetic in their first session instead of their tenth.
- Ambient audio. Per-scene music and effects, cued by the DM.
- Homebrew that works. Custom items, classes and rules built into the system rather than tracked in a side document nobody reads.
- Tokens and art. Custom character tokens rather than coloured circles.
What you need
A browser, Discord, a microphone, and a stable connection. That is the entire list. Foundry runs in a browser tab from the DM's server — no download, no account to buy, no subscription. Cameras are optional and most of our tables do not use them.
Which of our Dungeon Masters run on Foundry
Most of them. A few also run on Owlbear Rodeo, Roll20 or Avrae depending on the system, and one or two run theatre-of-the-mind on Discord alone where the game suits it. Each Dungeon Master profile lists what they use.
Systems we run on it
D&D 5e mixing the 2014 and 2024 rules is the bulk of it. Our DMs also run Pathfinder 2e, Call of Cthulhu, Shadowdark, Mothership, Blades in the Dark, LANCER, Star Trek Adventures, Savage Worlds, Daggerheart, Fabula Ultima and Pokemon Tabletop United on the same setup.
Try it before you commit
Session zero happens in Foundry, so you get to use it before you have paid for anything. If you have only ever played on Roll20 or around a physical table, that session is usually the one where people decide they are not going back.
